Meet Stephen Knoll

  • Born in Wisconsin, Stephen was interested in hair design from early childhood. At age 11, he was coloring and cutting. By high school, already pushing existing limits of creativity, he was styling the hair of women in his hometown. The Move to New York was inevitable.

After working for a brief period in New York’s top salons, Stephen began a flourishing freelance career. This led him to style for some of the most prestigious advertising campaigns, as well as editorial work appearing in magazines such as Vogue, Bazaar, InStyle, Elle, Cosmo and countless others.

Opening his namesake salon in 1991, he became one of the few contemporary hair stylists active as both a salon and session stylist. Today, Stephen continues to work in his salon and as a photo session stylist, traveling in the United States and abroad to work with his celebrity clients and other clients of luminary status.

  • In 2002, Stephen partnered with Japan’s third largest cosmetic company, KOSE Corporation to develop a premier hair care line for the Asian market - Stephen Knoll New York. The line is comprised of 60 products including hair care, styling, and color products, all manufactured with the most advanced cosmetic technology available. The line is sold in 6,000 stores in Japan, and is currently establishing in China and Taiwan. The spring of 2012 introduced the Stephen Knoll New York Professional line, sold exclusively to the best salons in the Japanese market.

In January 2013 Knoll’s Professional Line was launched in the USA.
